1.  What is Zycosoil?

Zycosoil is a specially formulated organosilane compound used as an anti-stripping additative for HMA and WMA.

2.  How does Zycosoil work?

Zycosoil molecules react with aggregate surfaces to form alkyl siloxane bonds. This change in surface characteristics of the aggregate allows for substantially improved bonding of asphalt binder with the aggregate surface, reducing the stripping susceptibility of the binder.

3.  What dosage is required?

Zycosoil is mixed with asphalt at a recommended dosage of 0.05 - 0.15% by weight of the asphalt binder content. Preferred universal range is 0.01% of bitumen.

4.  What makes Zycosoil a "Nanotechnology"?

A nanometer represents one billionth of a meter and technologies that operate on the scale of 0-100nn are considered to be nanotechnologies. When used in asphalt, Zycosoil reacts with the surface to make 4-5nm of surface layer of alkyl (hydrocarbon bitumen loving) siloxane (Si-O Si).

5.  Does Zycosoil improve the Tensile Strength Ratio?

Zycosoil eliminates stripping / debonding of asphalt binder to improve the TSR by 10 - 30%.

6.  Does Zycosoil improve compaction?

The addition of 0.1% of Zycosoil in asphalt binder improves compaction density by 1 - 1.5%.

7.  Does Zycosoil have an ordor?

Zycosoil has a slightly sweet smell but no odor when mixed into the emulsion.

8.  Is Zycosoil Corrosive?                                                                             

Unlike amines and lime, Zycosoil is not corrosive.

9.  How does Zycosoil reduce moisture susceptibility?

Most aggregates contain silicates that have silanol groups on the surface. Zycosoil reacts with these silanol groups to convert them into alkyl siloxane groups. The alkyl groups help to make it compatible with the asphalt. Alkyl siloxane bonds are the strongest bonds and are hear and UV stable. This eliminates debonding and reduces moisture susceptibility.

10. Is Zycosoil suitable for different types of aggregate?

Yes, since Zycosoil reacts with silanol groups on the aggregate surface, it is suitable for all types of aggregates that have silicate content. Aggregate surface where Zycosoil is not effective is 'pure limestone aggregate' where the major component is CaCO3.

11. How is Zycosoil added to the asphalt binder?

There are three methods:

  1. Terminal Addition - Zycosoil can be added directly into heated binder at the terminal. It is stable in binder over 150° C for at least two weeks.

  2. Tank Addition - It can also be added during the time of loading into the plant storage tank. In this case, mixing of Zycosoil can be done using a recirculation pump.

  3. In Line Mixing - Zycosoil can also be metered into the asphalt binder just before it is sprayed over heated aggregates.

12. Is a dust coating on aggregates a problem?

Dust coatings on aggregate can be a difficult problem to deal with. Because of the water-loving dust interface, the donding between the aggregate and the binder becomes extremely poor and leads to increased moisture susceptibility. Zycosoil is as reactive with dust and clay coatings as it is with aggregates so it makes dust/clay oil loving, reducing the moisture susceptibility.

13. Can Zycosoil leach out into the ground water?

No. Zycosoil is a reactive molecule and once applied, it chemically bonds with the aggregate forming UV and heat stable alkyl siloxane bonds. That means leaching of Zycosoil into the ground water is not possible.

14. What is the shelf life of Zycosoil?

Zycosoil is a very stable compound. We recommend use within 24 months of the manufacturing date. As long as the product is a clear liquid upon visual examination, it is considered suitable for use. To ensure proper workability of the product, dissolve a small amount in water (1:10 dilution). If the diluted solution is clear, the product is good for use.

15. What type of equipment is required when using Zycosoil?

Zycosoil can be metered into the asphalt binder using any suitable liquid pump that can handle viscosities under 2000 cps. The pump can be cleaned by flushing with water or alcohol (methanol or ethanol)  ↑To Top solvent.

16. Is Zycosoil useful for WMA?

WMA processes have reduced mixing temperatures to 120 - 125°. Lower termpeatures lead to residual water which produces poor bonding. Zycosoil has functional groups which are activated by this residual moisture. This causes Zycosoil to react with the aggregate surface which results in good bonding between aggregate and asphalt even at low temperatures.

17. Does the use of Zycosoil change the asphalt binder grade?

No. The National Center for Asphalt Technology has done extensive studies regarding the effect of Zycosoil on the asphalt binder. They concluded that the binder grade does not change with the use of Zycosoil.

18. Can Zycosoil be used in all types of modified and unmodified binders?

Yes. Zycosoil can be used and mixed with modified as well as unmodified binders.

19. Can Zycosoil be used in wet, cold and snowy regions?

Yes. Zycosoil can be used as an asphalt additive in wet, cold and snowy regions. Two of the main problem paving in colder regions is with compactability and with wet aggregate. With the technology used in Zycosoil however, moisture acts as a catalyst or accelerator that promotes the Zycosoil reactivity on the aggregate surface to make it very effective.
