1.  What is Nanotac?

Nanotac is an organosilicon compound that can be easily mixed with cationic bitumen emulsion.

2.  Is Nanotac reactive?

Yes. It reacts will all inorganic surfaces and soils such as aggregates or milled road surfaces. Nanotac is reactive under ambient conditions to Silanol (Si-OH) groups on the inorganic surface.

3.  Does Nanotac improve binding with the road surface?

Once dry nanotac substantially improves bonding of bitumen with the stone or asphalt layer.

4.  Is Nanotac a Nanotechnology?

Technologies on the scale of 0-200 nm are considered to be nonotechnology based. Nanotac when solubilized in cationic bitumen emulsion has an estimated size of 4-6 nm and forms a mono-layer of 4-6 nm which improves bonding and creates water resistance.

5.  Does Nanotac help to reduce nozzle clogging?

Nanotac improves stability of an emulsion and reduces the surface tension. This helps to keep nozzle spray uniform and reduces clogging tendancies.

6.  Does Nanotac help in reducing the temperature during lay down of asphalt emulsion?

Nanotac will help reduce the application temperature from 65-70°C down to 40-45°C or room temperature depending on the dilution.

7.  Does Nanotac improve penetration of cationic bitumen emulsion?

When mixed with either slow, medium or fast setting emulsion, Nanotac can wet and penetrate aggregate surfacs, milled surfaces by a few mm, making it a completely water resistant and well bonded asphalt layer.

8.  Does Nanotac based emulsion improve water resistance?

Yes, because Nanotac can achieve a near 100% coverage of the aggregate surface due to wetting and converting the entire water loving surface to a modified hydrophobic surface. The result is a surface that is very resistant to water infiltration and will help keep subbases dry.

9.  What is the minimum thickness of asphalt required to bond an existing road surface or stone based layer to hot mix asphalt or cold mix asphlat?

With a particle size of 2-10 microns of cationic bitumen emulsion one may estimate a 10 micron film sufficient to get 100% coverage and bond with the incoming asphalt layer. That makes the base molecularly oil loving and gives an extremely water resistant chemical bonding with the incoming asphalt.

10. What is the key benefit of Nanotac?

Nanotac ensures the tack coat or prime coat is chemically bonded and makes the surface water resistant, eliminating the possibility of debonding between the asphalt to base layer. This creates a monolithic structure that allows stresses to be transferred to the base layer and prevent stress accumulation in the top asphalt layer eliminating faulty cracking typically observed in a wearing course.

11. Can Nanotac leach out into the ground water?

No. Nanotac is a reactive molecule with various inorganic surfaces. Once applied it forms UV and heat stable siloxane bonds with the substrate. Therefore, leaching of Nanotac into the ground water is not possible. The solvent ethylene glycol too is easily biodegradable in 3 to 7 days.

12. What type of water is required for Nanotac dilution?

Most potable water can be used for dilution of Nanotac. High ph water (over pH8) and high turbidity (over 1000 TDS) are not suitable.

13. What is the shelf life of an unopened Nanotac container?

Nanotac is a very stable compound. We recommend use before 24 months after manufacture. As long as the product appears as a clear liquid upon visual examination, it is considered suitable for use. to ensure workability of the product, dissolve a small amount of product in water (1:10 dilution). As long as the diluted solution is clear, the product is good for use.

14. What is the stability of Nanotac treated bitumen emulsion solution?

Since Nanotac is a reactive product, inter-molecular condensation, reactions between Nanotac molecules with each other, can reduce the efficiency of the product. It is recommended that a diluted solution of the product be used within 12 hours of mixing with bitumen emulsion.

15. What type of equipment is required for Nanotac?

No special equipment is necessary for bitumen emulsion containing Nanotac. Standard equipment can be used for mixing and diluting the product.

16. What precaution should be taken for storage and handling?

Keep Nanotac away from sources of ignition and sparks. Keep it from coming in contact with oxidizing material and do not store near chemicals such as perchlorates, peroxides, chromic acid and nitric acid. Containers should also be kept out of directy sunlight. Nanotac is reactive with moisture and any exposure to moisture can lead to viscosity build up and jelling. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles while handling the product.

17. How is it diluted?

Nanotac can be added to water solubilized or can be added to the diluted bitumen emulsion at a given residual solids directly.

18. Does Nanotac help with reducing tire pick-up?

When used as recommended paving vehicles can travel on the surface within 15 minutes of paving without tire pick-up or stickiness. The paving crew will also see practically no sticking of the tack coat to their boots. This is a hugh benefit in terms of eliminating tire marks.
